NPMC Cardiologist glean information from local professional trainer

Albert Smith, owner of 64Bit Fitness, recently spoke to Hot Springs Cardiology Associates about his approach to helping patients and clients who are looking to make healthier lifestyle changes after a cardiac diagnosis. As part of the National Park Medical Center’s “Making Communities Healthier” program, Smith shared his philosophy and practice while building relationships with medical professionals.
A Certified Professional Trainer with several years of experience, Smith helps others achieve their health and wellness goals by meeting clients where they are. He said he believes that idea is crucial, especially for cardiac patients, because everyone has different starting points, limitations, and goals.
"Exercise is one of the best treatment plans for several cardiac issues. Working with professionals in the community to help maintain our patient's health, mobility and independence is important," said Cardiologist Dr. Greg St. John.
“I will always create a personalized program that considers your current fitness level, medical history, and comfort zone,” Smith said. “My programs are flexible and adapt as you progress or if you experience any setbacks. This personalized approach helps to build confidence and ensures a safe and enjoyable experience. Working out should be challenging but also should be fun, otherwise, who wants to show up to the next one?”
Smith stressed the importance of working closely with your doctor before starting any exercise program. National Park Medical Center offers a cardiac rehabilitation program to patients who are recovering from a heart event. Treatment can begin in the hospital following a heart event, or after discharge.
“The most important thing for cardiac patients is to work closely with their doctor before starting any exercise program. They can help determine the safest and most effective approach based on your specific condition. Once you have the green light, consider these steps: start slow and gradually increase intensity; focus on a variety of exercises; listen to your body; and find a supportive environment.”
While Smith works with people who have a variety of reasons for wanting to improve their health and well-being, Hot Springs Cardiology Associates found value in his philosophy and saw they could glean information to help their patients.
Smith said he uses a progress and regress approach, which he said is a natural part of any fitness journey, especially for cardiac patients who might be rebuilding strength and endurance.
“There will be days when you feel amazing and smash your goals, and there will be days when you feel tired or sore and need to take it easier,” he said. “The key is to trust the process and focus on the long-term trend. I am always sitting with clients to help them identify these cycles, adjust their program accordingly and reinforce trusting in yourself and in the process. Think of it like taking two steps forward and one step back – you're still moving in the right direction, and I am there to remind you of that!”
Smith started his fitness journey in 2017. He said he found himself in the perfect storm of being overworked, depressed and alone. “I went from 370 pounds at my heaviest to 220 pounds,” he said. “The confidence and health benefits that came along with that transformation still continue to pay dividends today. After seeing so many others struggle with many of the same issues that plagued me, I knew I had to help others as well. Fast forward, and here I am today, on a never-ending quest to help others take control of their health and wellness and find the same freedoms I did.”
